The Schutzstaffel, also called the SS was a major organization in the Nazi Party, essentially the "Nazi Army." It started as only a small unit, but eventually grew to become one of the most powerful forces in Germany, with almost one million men a part of it.

Their training consisted of several intense months and was the hardest in the world... they were even called "The Elite." They based it on physical fitness, small-arms, and political indoctrination. If they did exceptionally well, then they were awarded the SS Totenkopfring (a silver ring with a skull and cross bones on the front and other runic symbols around the sides). These rings could not be sold or inherited, it was taken to the grave.

The SS was very selective of their members and decided based upon "Nazi Ideology." The Nazi Ideology defined a strong, central government under the "Führer," Hitler. They were against communism, and believed very strongly in creating the "Master Race." Hitler had created the SS to be a group of men that were superior in racial purity and ability than other Germans, essentially a model of the "Master Race." The master race was a branch of the Aryan race which is people of Northern European descent. SS officer candidates had to prove their German ancestry dating back to 1750 as well as proving that they had no Jewish ancestors. PICTURE OF MASTER RACE

Training was broken down into levels. After training, they were sent to special schools for technique classes. They worked very intensely, drills and beliefs were "drilled" into their heads.
Some things that are believe are normal military tactics, were not at all allowed in the SS. Such as the word "sir".

PICTURE OF MASTER RACE
One third of the SS candidates failed inspection and never became part of the group. The SS was the most feared para-military organization in history and they were extremely loyal to Hitler.

The SS started out as a branch of another Nazi organization, the SA, and was made to be Hitlers bodyguards. Originally it only had 30 men, but over time it gained more and more memberships because the SS was more loyal to Hitler then the semi-independent SA. Eventually it grew to have almost a million members both fighting on the front lines, and working as political police. As the size of the SS grew, it also gained many expanded to do many more functions for Hitler. Here is a link to a time-line showing the growth and development of the SS:

Einsatzgruppen
The Einsatzgruppen was a special unit of the SS formed on an "as-needed" basis. The Einsatzgruppen was formed to enter occupied areas, seize vital records, and neutralize potential threats. They got to use these powers during the annexations of Austria and Czechoslovakia as well as to eliminate the Polish elite to prevent resistance from German occupation. At its peak, the Einsatzgruppen was also sent into Russia for extermination and geoncide of "undesirables", such as Jews, gypsies, and communists.
